Whether I am planning an event, a wedding, a special gift, or patterns for an interior inevitably I am drawn towards a romantic classical style that is often epitomised by Fine Art designs. I love the beauty of the architecture, gardens, paintings, sculpture, prints, and other objects, which have been lovingly created by talented artists through the generations.
The time that these artists have taken to create something, the attention to detail, the richness and opulent nature of the colours is something that I try to bring into my designs.
What is so engaging about drawing from history is the way that even tiny samples of the rich detail in historical items can be incorporated into modern designs.
For example taking the elements of a floor tile from an Italian venue which was incorporated into a wedding invitation, the detail in part of the elevation of a French château that become part of a wedding suite, and bespoke stationery for the château itself.
The front of a beautiful house can become an intrinsic part of an invitation suite, initially recreated as a venue sketch which can then be used in numerous ways; reduced and used on an invitation, an envelope liner and given as a print as a beautiful memento, or keepsake of the event.
When creating surface patterns there are so many sources of inspiration, we have centuries of fabric design, each decade brings with it a different but recognisable style. In taking references from the past, I am paying homage to a period, but creating something new.
Many clients like to incorporate calligraphy into their fine art designs and again there are so many different styles of calligraphy, which when combined with illustrations become a treasured piece of art. Often the initial conversation will start with a request, ‘I’d like to create something special for my partner’s birthday, our anniversary etc,’ and from that initial request, we work together to create a very personal and unique gift.
I love drawing and painting from nature, I have been very fortunate in growing different blooms, which provide me with ready-made natural examples for my watercolours. I love flowers from an earlier era, roses, dahlias, and other timeless examples.
My collections are constantly evolving, I find new inspiration every day, and I love collaborating with both individuals and companies in developing unique and special creations and personal projects.
